Turkish Airlines or Norwegian flight delayed?

Two popular carriers with a meaningful difference in EU261 coverage — Turkish is a non-EU airline, which changes when compensation applies.

Turkish Airlines

Important scope clarification Turkish Airlines is a Turkish carrier, not an EU airline. EU261 applies only when your flight departed from an EU/EEA airport — for example, a Turkish Airlines flight from Frankfurt or Amsterdam to Istanbul qualifies. A Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to London or Frankfurt does not qualify under EU261, because it departs a non-EU airport on a non-EU carrier. This is a common source of confusion since Turkish Airlines serves many European destinations.
Verified · checked Jun 2026 Turkish Airlines flies to more countries than any other airline, with Istanbul's hub position meaning many itineraries have an Istanbul connection that sits outside EU261 jurisdiction, even when other legs of the same journey are covered. Check each segment of your journey individually against the departure-airport rule.

For EU-departing Turkish Airlines flights that do qualify, the standard EU261 compensation amounts apply. Claims go through Turkish Airlines' online feedback form. We have not found documented airline-specific patterns (half-payment, voucher substitution, etc.) that apply specifically to Turkish Airlines — if that changes, we'll update this page.

Turkey's own national aviation authority (SHGM) handles complaints about Turkish Airlines on non-EU routes — a separate, different process from EU261.

Norwegian Air Shuttle

Verified · checked Jun 2026 Norwegian is an EU-registered carrier (Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA is based in Norway, an EEA member). EU261 applies to Norwegian flights departing EU/EEA airports on all routes, and also to Norwegian flights arriving in the EU/EEA since it's an EU-based carrier — the same wide coverage as Lufthansa or Air France.

Norwegian had significant financial difficulties in 2020-2022 (including a temporary administration period) and emerged restructured. Claims currently go through Norwegian's online contact form under Customer Service → Claims. Response times have generally improved post-restructuring, but we have not found recent large-scale documented patterns specific to Norwegian's current claims handling — check updated passenger forums if you want current real-world timelines before filing.

Norway's Civil Aviation Authority (Luftfartstilsynet) handles escalations for flights departing Norway.
